How the flooring calculation works

Measure the room at its widest points, including closets that get the same product. Then convert area into purchasable boxes:

  1. Floor area = length × width (sq ft)
  2. Sq ft to buy = area × (1 + waste ÷ 100)
  3. Boxes = ceil(sq ft to buy ÷ sq ft per box)

Waste is not padding for fun—rips, door cuts, and out-of-square walls produce offcuts you cannot return once opened. Straight layouts often use 10%; diagonals and herringbone usually need 15%. Worked example

Room 15 × 12 ft, 20 sq ft/box, 10% waste:

  1. Area = 180 sq ft
  2. Buy = 180 × 1.10 = 198 sq ft
  3. Boxes = ceil(198 ÷ 20) = 10

Buy cartons from the same dye lot when you can, and acclimate the flooring in the room per the manufacturer before install.
