Your combined marginal rate on the next dollar is about 39.0%, while your effective tax rate on all gross is about 27.2%. The gap is normal — lower brackets and deductions pull the average down.
Your annualized gross is about 38% above a static California average-wage benchmark (~$78,000/year).
Suggested next steps
- This page is California-only by design — other states get their own URLs in Phase 2.
- Compare biweekly vs monthly gross if your employer offers multiple pay schedules.
- Pair with the Hourly to Salary Converter if you need to annualize an hourly CA wage first.
How the California paycheck estimate works
- Annualize your gross from the pay frequency (weekly 52, biweekly 26, semi-monthly 24, monthly 12).
- Subtract annual pre-tax contributions (for example, 401k) from wages used for income tax.
- Estimate federal and California income tax with simplified brackets and deductions.
- Add employee Social Security and Medicare.
- Net = gross − pre-tax − taxes; divide back to a per-paycheck figure.
The results panel explains effective vs marginal rates with rule-based copy and compares your gross to a static California wage benchmark (Section 15 free differentiation — no paid API).
Worked example
Semi-monthly gross $4,500, single, $6,000/year pre-tax:
- Annual gross = 4,500 × 24 = $108,000
- Income-tax wages ≈ 108,000 − 6,000 = $102,000
- Federal + CA + FICA are estimated from simplified tables
- Take-home per check = annual net ÷ 24
Effective rate might land in the high teens/low twenties while the combined marginal rate is higher — the tool spells out that gap in plain language.
