How to Measure a Room for Flooring
How do you measure a room for flooring? Measure length and width in feet at the widest points, multiply for square footage, add a waste percent (often 10%), then divide by the coverage printed on each box and round up. The Flooring Calculator does the box math instantly.

Steps
- Clear edges and measure length and width in feet (include alcoves).
- Area = length × width.
- Buy area = area × (1 + waste%).
- Boxes = ceil(buy area ÷ sq ft per box).
Example: 12×15 ft = 180 sq ft → with 10% waste = 198 sq ft → at 20 sq ft/box → 10 boxes.

Do I include closets when measuring for flooring?
Yes if those areas get the same flooring. Measure closet length and width separately and add the square footage to the main room before applying waste.
How much extra flooring should I buy?
Many DIY installs use about 10% waste for straight layouts. Diagonals, herringbone, or many door cuts may need closer to 15%. Round boxes up after waste.
