Suggested next steps

  • If the bill already includes a service charge, tip only on the portion that wasn't covered — check the receipt before paying twice.
  • Split confirmed: each person covers $7.79 of the tip (plus their share of the bill).
  • Round the total to a clean dollar amount at the register if you prefer simpler cash math.

How the tip calculation works

A tip is a percentage of your bill. This tool multiplies your bill amount by your chosen tip percentage, then adds that tip to the bill for a grand total. If you are splitting the check, the total is divided evenly by the number of people.

The core formulas are:

  • Tip amount = bill × (tip% ÷ 100)
  • Total with tip = bill + tip amount
  • Per person = total with tip ÷ number of people

Results update as you type — no submit button. You can use quick presets (10%, 15%, 18%, 20%, 22%, 25%) or the slider for any rate from 0% to 40%. Choose a service type (restaurant, delivery, bar, or cafe) to unlock rule-based suggestions and a comparison against typical US tipping ranges for that setting.

Those suggestions are not a live AI model. They are fixed, transparent rules based on your tip percentage and service type — for example, noting when you are below the common 18% middle tip for sit-down dining, or reminding delivery customers that drivers often rely on tips. You can also compare 15%, 18%, and 20% side by side before you pay, speak the bill amount with browser voice input where supported, and download a simple result card to share.

Worked example

Imagine a sit-down dinner for two. The pre-tip bill is $86.50. You want to leave an 18% tip and split evenly.

  1. Tip amount = 86.50 × 0.18 = $15.57
  2. Total with tip = 86.50 + 15.57 = $102.07
  3. Each person pays = 102.07 ÷ 2 = $51.04

At 15%, the tip would be $12.98 and the total $99.48 ($49.74 each). At 20%, the tip would be $17.30 and the total $103.80 ($51.90 each). Use the scenario table in the calculator to see those options instantly for your own bill.

Methodology and notes

Percentages are calculated on the bill figure you enter. We default examples and benchmarks to US dollars and common US tipping customs for 2026. Tipping expectations vary by country, venue, and whether a service charge is already included — always check your receipt. This tool does not process payments or store your bill details on a server; everything runs in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

For sit-down restaurant service in the US, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is the usual range, with 18–20% common when service is good. Delivery, cafes, and bars often land closer to 10–20% depending on order size and service level. This calculator’s benchmarks reflect those everyday norms, not a legal requirement.
