A 12×12 room with 8 ft ceilings, ceiling included, needs 528 sq ft of surface — 19 sheets of 4×8.

How the drywall calculation works

Hang counts start from the four walls, optionally add the ceiling, then apply a waste buffer before dividing by sheet area:

  1. Surface = 2 × (L + W) × H + (ceiling? L × W : 0)
  2. With waste = surface × 1.10
  3. Sheets = ceil(with waste ÷ sheet area)

This estimator does not subtract every door and window. The 10% waste factor usually covers openings and cutoffs for rectangular rooms. For a tighter takeoff, subtract large openings manually. Longer 4×10 or 4×12 sheets reduce seams on tall walls but are heavier—plan a helper or lift for ceilings.

Room 12 × 12 ft, height 8 ft, ceiling on, 4×8 sheets:

  1. Walls = 2 × 24 × 8 = 384 sq ft
  2. Ceiling = 144 sq ft
  3. Total = 528 sq ft
  4. With waste = 528 × 1.10 = 580.8
  5. Sheets = ceil(580.8 ÷ 32) = 19

Should I include the ceiling?
