Suggested next steps
- Pair with the California Paycheck Calculator when comparing take-home pay vs after-tax spending power in CA.
- District rates can differ inside the same county; use Custom rate when you know the exact %.
- Use the Discount Calculator if the item is on sale before tax is applied.
How the California sales tax math works
Add tax
- Tax = pre-tax price × (rate ÷ 100)
- Total = pre-tax + tax
Remove tax
- Pre-tax = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)
- Tax = total − pre-tax
Pick an example city/county combined rate or enter a custom %. A what-if table compares the state base, a static CA average combined benchmark, and nearby rates.
Worked example
Pre-tax $49.99 at an example 9.5% Los Angeles-area combined rate (Add tax):
- Tax = 49.99 × 0.095 ≈ $4.75
- Total ≈ $54.74
If you instead paid $54.74 and remove 9.5% tax, pre-tax returns to about $49.99.
Methodology and notes
This is an educational estimator, not tax advice or an official lookup. Grocery, prescription, and other special treatments are not modeled. Pair with the California Paycheck Calculator for CA income take-home context, or the Discount Calculator when an item is on sale before tax.
Frequently asked questions
What is California’s base sales tax rate?
The statewide base is 7.25%. Cities and districts usually add local taxes, so the combined rate at the register is often higher. This tool includes example combined rates and a custom % field.
Are the city rates official and always current?
No. Presets are static planning examples. District rates change. Confirm the exact rate with the seller or an official CDTFA source before relying on a figure for compliance.
What’s the difference between Add tax and Remove tax?
Add tax starts from a pre-tax sticker price and computes tax + total. Remove tax starts from what you paid (tax included) and backs out the pre-tax amount and tax portion.
How does this relate to the California Paycheck Calculator?
Both are California-specific finance tools. Paycheck estimates income/payroll withholdings; this page estimates sales tax on purchases. Use them together when comparing take-home pay with after-tax spending.
