How the GPA calculation works

GPA (grade point average) is a credit-weighted average of grade points:

  1. Convert each letter grade to points on the 4.0 scale.
  2. Quality points for a course = grade points × credit hours.
  3. Semester GPA = sum of quality points ÷ sum of credit hours.

Example mapping used here includes plus/minus steps (A− 3.7, B+ 3.3, etc.). Results update as you change grades or credits — no submit button. A pie chart shows how many courses fall in each letter bucket so you can see grade mix at a glance.

Rule-based tips compare your GPA to common US bands (for example, ~3.5–3.7+ for many honor rolls, 3.0 for many graduate-admissions floors, 2.0 for good-standing thresholds). Those are planning heuristics, not your school’s official rules.

Worked example

Three courses:

  • Biology: A− (3.7) × 4 credits = 14.8 quality points
  • History: B+ (3.3) × 3 credits = 9.9 quality points
  • Calculus: B (3.0) × 4 credits = 12.0 quality points

Total quality points = 36.7. Total credits = 11.
GPA = 36.7 ÷ 11 = 3.336 (shown as about 3.34).
