How to Calculate a Tip
To calculate a tip, multiply your tip base by the tip percentage and divide by 100 — for example, $86.50 × 18% = $15.57. Most Americans tip on the pre-tax subtotal at 15–20% for sit-down service. Use the free tip calculator for live math, bill splits, and state sales-tax pages.

How to calculate a tip step by step
Tipping is a percentage of what you spent on service. The simplest accurate method:
- Start with the pre-tax subtotal (recommended) or the post-tax total.
- Multiply by your tip rate as a decimal (18% → 0.18).
- Add the tip to the bill (and tax, if you are tracking it) for what you pay.
Example: Bill $50, tip 20% pre-tax → tip $10 → pay $60 before tax, or $60 + tax if tax is separate on the receipt.

Pre-tax vs post-tax in practice
Pre-tax tips reward service only. Post-tax tips include a percentage of the tax line, which is higher in states with large combined rates. Neither is illegal; etiquette leans pre-tax. Our calculator defaults to pre-tax and explains the difference in one line under the toggle.
Splitting a check
Calculate the group tip first, then divide the grand total by the number of people for an even split. If orders were uneven, keep the tip percentage on the full subtotal and adjust who pays more of the food portion in Venmo or similar.

Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate a tip quickly?
Move the decimal on the bill one place left for 10%, then adjust: 20% is double that, 15% is 10% plus half of 10%, and 18% is roughly 20% minus a little. Or use the tip calculator for exact tip, tax, total, and per-person shares.
Should I tip before or after tax?
Etiquette guides usually recommend tipping on the pre-tax amount. Tipping after tax is fine for convenience and leaves a slightly larger tip. Pick one rule for the table and stay consistent.
What tip percentage is normal in the US?
Sit-down restaurants commonly see 15–20%, with 18–20% for good service. Delivery and cafes often run 10–20%. Always check for an included service charge before adding more.
